The canonical gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, provide not only Jesus’ words but also his actions, the context within which the words are spoken. By presenting Jesus’ words without those intervening stories, we can experience Jesus’ teachings in a way that is fresh and immediate. When we are confronted directly with a saying in The Words of Jesus, we cannot glide over it as we follow the story; rather, we have the singular opportunity to linger over his words and reflect on their meanings. A valuable teaching tool and research resource in the classroom, The Words of Jesus is a new way to study the foundations of Christianity and is ideal for those who seek an introduction to Jesus’ ethical teachings.

“A clearer understanding of what Jesus said.

This book allows you to read the words of Jesus as He said them -- all together. It makes quite an impact -- at least it does for me. Some new concepts come as I read all the words together without "interruption," for lack of a better word, although the Gospel narratives are essential, of course, to truly understand the message of Christ.”

Reviews

I really loved the third section, which pieced together the four gospels chronologically. It was a brilliant reminder that the gospels are accounts from different witnesses. I enjoyed reading the same event from two or more gospels in rapid succession, as it highlighted the lack of collusion between witnesses; though extremely similar, the accounts were not identical, and lent further credibility to the gospels.
